Reiki, Grounding and Meditation

Imagine if everyone you met today, including the person in the mirror, were grounded and safe — safe for themselves, and safe for others. That would improve your day, wouldn’t it?

Living in today’s world, surrounded by a plethora of distractions — plus all the things our minds throw at us — staying grounded and safe can seem like a full time job.

For those of us who are hyper-responsive to the needs of others, it’s even more challenging. We naturally go out to people far too easily, or let them in too deeply.

Not everything that comes naturally is a good thing.

When we go out to others too readily, we lose our balance, we lose our center, we lose our roots. We go out to others because we want to help them, but what good can we accomplish in this world without roots?

That’s why I encourage you again and again — ok, I nag you — to learn habits of grounding. That’s why I chose to celebrate 25 years of Reiki practice by organizing the Thankfulness Interview series.

Today, in the fourth interview of the series, Swami Saradananda will share tips gleaned from 40 years of yoga and meditation practice to help you tend your chakras so you can stay grounded in everyday life, and when offering care to others, both at home and professionally.

Please click here to register for this free webinar that you can access online, on the phone, or by recording, at your leisure — but only if you preregister.

The more reliably you ground yourself in yourself, the happier and healthier you will feel, and the more effectively you will be able to help others.

And the easier it will become to meditate. Not what you expected?

Meditation is the mother of all healing (including Reiki practice), and the key to developing wisdom. Through meditation, we extend beyond our limitations to find inspiration, inner knowing, and compassion.

Meditation drew me to India many years ago. It was a move that moved everything. It changed my understanding of the mind and enabled me to see in a more holistic way. It also freed my mind to be more logical. Go figure.

That’s what happens when you give yourself to spiritual practice, whether it’s meditation, Reiki, yoga, or in my case, all three. The effects show up where you least expect them. And they keep showing up for the rest of your life.

I realize not too many people can schedule two years to live in an ashram in India immersed in spiritual practices.

That’s why I asked Sharon Salzberg and Sally Kempton, two of today’s most respected, effective meditation teachers, to bring meditation to you.

Sharon Salzberg teaches lovingkindness meditation. Lovingkindness is an accessible, deceptively simple (sounds a lot like Reiki…) meditation practice that has special resonance for Reiki practitioners. Lovingkindness requires no greater effort than becoming more mindful of what you are doing already — wishing others well, wanting people to be happy and healthy.

Simple practices, while readily accesible, arguably take longer to truly master; the skill of not doing is more challenging than any technique, no matter how complex it might be.

Learning from experienced practitioners is a great advantage. An experienced teacher helps us reach not just the low-lying fruit, but also the ripest fruits buried in the thicket of the mind. Sharon Salzberg has been teaching lovingkindness meditation for 30 years.

Please click here to join Sharon Salzberg and me on Monday, November 28 at 3PM EST for a conversation about lovingkindness that will include a brief, comfortable practice session. Let Sharon’s guidance and the presence of the community support you in discovering just how easily lovingkindness can refresh your being.

Have you ever thought about why you practice, or strive to practice?

One ineffable reality is the goal of all paths and practices. It is everywhere at all times, the context of all contexts, beyond the mind and as close as the breeze on your face.

Sally Kempton will help you recognize the moments in and out of meditation when your awareness gets a glimpse of this reality. She will give you very doable tips how to recognize and capitalize on the awakenings that happen in daily life — your daily life.

Please click here to register for my conversation with Sally Kempton on Monday, December 5 at 2 PM EST. This is the final interview in the 2011 Thankfulness Interview series.

Reiki Healing Jubilee Thankfulness Series

All my Reiki initiations happened in November (not the same November), making it truly a month of thankfulness and thanks-giving for me.

November 2011 marks my 25th year of Reiki practice — my Reiki Silver Jubilee — and gratitude has put me in an almost giddy, and very giving frame of mind.

So I found some accomplices. Lots of them.

I asked seven of my esteemed colleagues, each one an internationally known expert, author, and teacher in his/her spiritual healing practice, to share practical tidbits from the enormous well of knowledge and wisdom they have lovingly gleaned through decades of practice.

Yes, decades. Even the “baby” of the group has been practicing for 20 years.

In this Thankfulness interview series, you will hear from experts in feng shui, intuition, botanicals (both essential oils and herbs), and meditation, each offering you practical tips and timeless wisdom to regain and maintain your inner spaciousness when you need it most, in the midst of your life just as it is, and while caring for those you care for, at home or professionally. (If you think you cannot meditate, just try practicing lovingkindness with Sharon Salzberg — oops, I’m getting ahead of myself!)

What’s unique about this gift is that each speaker will address your specific needs as a Reiki practitioner, both in your personal life and also as a professional giving treatment and initiation. (Many of your concerns are common to other practitioners and healers, so do invite your friends to join us.)

The Thankfulness interview series will give you practical, powerful, accessible tools for your self care, so you can stay vibrant, grounded, poised, and safe no matter what life throws at you. The focus is on you, strengthening your well-being and empowering you to make smart lifestyle choices moment by moment.

The Thankfulness events are not about mixing other practices into your Reiki practice. Of course, you can do that if you want to, but my intention is to give you more healing options to strengthen and maintain your own well-being.

After all, we make a lot of choices between our Reiki practice sessions. And I’ll bet a few of those choices could be more self-sustaining.

When I learned to practice Reiki in 1986, I was already a professional healer, sharing with my clients what I had learned through years of study and personal use of a wide range of traditional healing practices.

I began incorporating Reiki treatment into my client sessions. Over time, it  became clear that Reiki healing on its own was sufficiently thorough, and I eventually dropped all the other techniques. (Please understand, I’m not saying you can’t mix it up if you want to; that’s totally your call.)

At the same time, I began practicing daily self-treatment (and still do). But I continued using my knowledge of traditional healing practices from around the world to support my health, and my family’s.

And that’s what we’ll share with you, traditional knowledge to inform your daily choices, accessible opportunities to step up your self care.

Did I mention every event is free? And that some will include special offers on quality products of interest?

Let’s make November a month of thanks-giving and self-care. Let’s bring greater ease, awareness and love into your life, and the lives of those you touch.

Each Thankfulness talk will be live, and I’ve scheduled them for various times of the day. We are scattered around the globe and there is no one-time-fits-all, so everyone who registers will receive a link to the recording. But you can only access the recordings if you register for the live talk, so be sure to register for every event that interests you, whether or not you can attend live.

I don’t want to overwhelm you with all the Thankfulness that’s coming your way, so I’ll start with the first two interviews, and unfold the schedule gradually in the blog and facebook.

You know how much easier it is to see when someone else is out of sync than to see what’s out of sync in ourselves? Feng shui, the Chinese art of placement, capitalizes on the very human tendency to look outside to make changes, and guides us to the changes we can make around us that will best support the changes we want to make in our lives.

Karen Rauch Carter wrote my favorite book on feng shui, and she will speak with us about easy adjustments to make our space support us personally and align with our professional goals.

We’ll discuss what common arrangements in your home can weaken you, and how to fix it. We’ll also talk about your work space — where to place your table and yourself in your office and when you are working in someone else’s space — and what placement tweaks support your growing business.

I want you to be successful. How else will we fulfill Hawayo Takata’s dream that Reiki practice be as common as aspirin?

Karen will speak with us on Tuesday, November 8, at 3 PM Eastern US time. Click here to register for Karen’s interview.

When I first came upon Sonia Choquette many years ago, I was struck by how balanced she is. This was particularly surprising because Sonia is an intuitive (as were her mother and grandmother). Although Sonia started working with clients as a teenager, she continued working seriously with her teachers, and went on to earn a Ph.D. in metaphysics.

Sonia can help you open your awareness and your heart as you go through your day, and while keeping your feet firmly on the ground. True intuition is grounded and clear, not impulsive. Learning to access your intuition moment to moment means keeping in touch with your state–discovering how you feel about things as you go, when you are still making choices, instead of looking back with regretful if-onlys.

Learning to live as what Sonia calls a sixth-sensory — tuned in to our intuition — saves us time, money, and pain. Sonia has been teaching people how to do this for many decades, and she’ll share some valuable tips with us. Click here to register for Sonia’s interview.

Please use the social sharing buttons to invite your friends and your friends’ friends to join us for any or all of the Thankfulness interviews. We can make a difference, we can gracefully create the changes we want, by gratefully taking good care of ourselves.

If you have used feng shui or your intuition to good result, please share your story in the comment section.

The Lotus Inside—Otagaki Rengetsu’s Poetry

I came across this poem and instantly recognized myself in it. When a poem can do that, it’s a very significant moment. So I went searching, especially because Reiki has made me fond of all things Japanese. I found gems like this one:

According to information available online:

“Otagaki Rengetsu, best known as a famous Japanese poet, was also a calligrapher, potter, and painter. She was born in 1791 into a samurai family with the surname Todo, but was soon adopted by the Otagaki family and given the name Nobu. Having lost her mother and brother at a young age, she served as lady-in-waiting at Kameoka Castle (in present-day Kyoto Prefecture) from the age of 7, until she returned home at the age of 16 to marry. In 1823, after the death of her husband and three young children, she became a Buddhist nun, adopting the name Rengetsu, which means “Lotus Moon.”

Rengetsu moved to Chion-In temple in Kyoto to be with her father, a Buddhist priest. She remained there for ten years until her father’s death, at which time she moved to the countryside. To earn a living Rengetsu wrote Japanese poetry and also produced clay teapots which she often decorated with carved inscriptions or calligraphy of her poems.”

For example the above piece of her teaware has this poem of hers inscribed on it:

She is best known for her waka poetry. According to Wikipedia:

Waka (??, literally “Japanese poem”) or Yamato uta is a genre of classical Japanese verse and one of the major genres of Japanese literature. The term was coined during the Heian period, and was used to distinguish Japanese-language poetry from kanshi(poetry written in Chinese by Japanese poets), and later from renga.

The term waka originally encompassed a number of differing forms, principally tanka (??, “short poem”) and choka (??, “long poem”), but also including bussokusekika, sedoka (???, “memorized [head repeated] poem”) and katauta (??, “poem fragment”). These last three forms, however, fell into disuse at the beginning of the Heian period, and choka vanished soon afterwards. Thus, the term waka came in time to refer only to tanka.

Japanese poet and critic Masaoka Shiki created the term tanka in the early twentieth century for his statement that waka should be renewed and modernized. Until then, poems of this nature had been referred to as waka or simply uta (“song, poem”). Haiku is also a term of his invention, used for his revision of standalone hokku, with the same idea.

Traditionally waka in general has had no concept of rhyme (indeed, certain arrangements of rhymes, even accidental, were considered dire faults in a poem), or even of line. Instead of lines, waka has the unit (?) and the phrase (?). (Units or phrases are often turned into lines when poetry is translated or transliterated into Western languages, however.)

Here’s an example of her calligraphy, inscribed with one of her poems:

In the paddies

between the hills

on a misty path

a human from takes shape:

a scarecrow.

Otagaki Rengetsu was prolific; her poems here are a mere handful. When you read her bio, it’s obvious that she actually lived real human challenges. Her poetry and art doesn’t come from some idyllic existence.

That’s why I bow to her spirit, for it remained light as a feather, and gracefully inspirational. I’ve fallen head over heels in love with her creative spirit and humility.

I leave you with two more for her poems.

And finally for a spiritual healing focus:

Gassho!

You Can Become an Instant Reiki Master

The internet is liberally sprinkled with ads proclaiming:

“You Too Can Become a Powerful Reiki Master in 48 Hours”

“Becoming A Powerful Reiki Master Has Never Been So Quick, Easy Or Complete.”

But how complete can “quick and easy” be?

Doesn’t mastery — of anything — by definition, take time?

Some think Reiki practice can be easily mastered because the technique is comparatively simple, but is it possible to master even the simplest technique without actually practicing it?

Regular self-practice over (a long) time actualizes the potential of the initiations, so that we ourselves are healed by our practice (what could be more powerful than that?).

Healed of what, you might ask?

Healed of whatever needs healing. The details vary from person to person and according to the situation, but ultimately, the healing is of our wrong understanding.

Our Reiki practice changes our understanding gradually and organically. Through our own process of healing, we (slowly) come to realize that mastery is not of the practice, but rather, of ourselves.

This profound healing, this realization, cannot happen instantly — or in 48 hours — but only through patient, consistent self-practice.

Becoming a Reiki master is becoming a student, a masterful student of your own ongoing practice, a poised walker of the path, with your Reiki practice as your constant, supportive companion and guide (Today only…).

Continuing practice unfolds the path before us, sometimes not revealing the next step until our foot is about to hit the ground. It takes time to develop trust in that process. It takes time to develop steadiness.

Of course we all like fast results. And when offering Reiki treatment, especially in an emergency, sometimes we get them. But rapid improvement in an extreme situation is the result of restoring balance to a system in distress; it is not the same as instant mastery.

It takes time to build stability in everyday life, which after all, is where we spend most of our time.

Let’s be mindful of the tendency to crave instant success and other mirages, and be willing instead to be the overnight success that was years in the making.

Because even if it were true that You Can Become an Instant Reiki Master, why would you want to?

What are some of the benefits you’ve received from your Reiki practice that have taken time to show up? Please click here to share.

The brain, being positive or negative, and intuition

Neuroscience is discovering that the brain has a ‘negativity bias.’ This is because processing danger signals is more important to survival than processing signals that are safe. This seems like a sensible adaption of the brain in early humans. We no longer live in constant danger to our survival. It seems some of our primal fears have survived into modern times, though perhaps they have morphed and may not be so recognizable.

"Intuition comes from within; thought, from without." — Yogananda

Humans today have money worries. Money is the primary way our society is setup to ‘secure’ survival. Humans today are afraid of not being loved; of not being successful; of not looking a certain way. We’re not facing wild animals anymore, instead they’re inside! And the triggers for negativity are still there, albeit they’re sanitized, complicated and hidden under layers.

The result is what scientists call a “negativity bias” in the brain. It’s like Velcro for negative experiences, but Teflon for positive ones. This is a great strategy for passing on gene copies – which is the engine of biological evolution – but a lousy one for quality of life. The brain is tilted toward survival, but tilted against happiness. — Rick Hanson

You may wonder what chance there is to be positive if the brain is wired this way. It gets worse:

…the more we practice reactivity to our fears (e.g. from small fears to PTSD), the stronger the neural connections in our brains become that make us more likely to be automatically reactive to our fears. Or, the more often we practice automatic negative thinking, the stronger the neural connections become that lead to more automatic reactivity toward automatic negative thinking. — Elisha Goldstein

The good news is that the same is true for positive thinking. Neuroplasticity works both ways. The brain is malleable and it can trend positive or negative.

…it is the simultaneity of firing (within a few thousandths of a second) of neurons that are connected with each other that leads to strengthening existing synapses – which are the junctions between neurons – and to building new ones.

For example, if you routinely dwell on your resentments and regrets, the neurons involved in that particular mental activity will fire busily together, and automatically start wiring together as well. Which will add one more bit of neural structure to feeling discontented, mistreated, angry, or sorrowful. On the other hand, if you regularly focus on the good facts around you and inside you – like your own good qualities, such as patience, determination, or kindness – then the neurons involved will wire together, stitching more resilience, hopefulness, confidence, and happiness into the fabric of your brain and your self. — Rick Hanson

All well and good. We can mold our brain. Much admired, researched and fawned upon, the brain is near deity status. However, the brain is still a material object, an organ. There are two other levels to our existence than the physical. These are mind and spirit.

Mind isn’t physical matter, but it is subtle matter; it’s ethereal and luminous. The mind isn’t limited to the confines of the brain. Every cell of the body has mind in it. It also goes beyond the body in the exchange of ideas and how thoughts live in our creations and relationships. The mind is mobile in its nature and influence. It’s local with the body and personal experiences, but it’s also nonlocal in its reach, what it influences, and what can influence it.

Since the mind is not the brain alone, it can be used to train the brain, and also to make choices moment to moment. The mind is able to observe our autopilot reactions and impulses. Observation is the first step to modification and change. The mind can help us to stop being victims of past patterns that have been wired in the brain by life experiences, heredity, and by the way we ‘view’ these experiences, in other words our attitude toward them.

It’s best if the mind itself is informed by something other than itself.

Generally, we think that the mind dwells in either the head or the heart. The head us the center for the outer mind that works through the senses. The heart is the center of the inner mind or feeling nature that transcends the senses. The brain is no more than a screen on which the energies of consciousness from the get reflected… This is not the physical heart but the core of knowing deep inside ourselves. We should not confuse this center with a physical location. It pervades all our mental activity. — David Frawley

The brain becomes what is fed to it, positive or negative. The mind can oversee that what the brain engages is healthy and productive, if awareness is cultivated. The question remains, how accurately is the mind perceiving. Ordinary mind processes input from the senses. The senses are prone to dullness, error, bad habits, and a host of other filters that can be delusive.

The senses and the mind are the outer doors through which knowledge percolates into the consciousness. Human knowledge filters in through the senses and is interpreted by the mind. If the senses err in perception, the conclusion drawn by the understanding of that data is also incorrect. — Paramahansa Yogananda

The next time you’re overcome with negative thoughts and feelings about yourself, your life, your circumstances, realize that these perceptions may not be true at all. Even if there are some real issues to deal with, negativity certainly won’t find you solutions. Most often, even if your perceptions have a tinge of truth, negativity takes on a life of its own and colors events darker than they actually are.

This is where intuition comes in. Intuition perceives truth directly. Everyone has native intuition. A lot of it is schooled out of us, but doesn’t disappear and so it can be cultivated, to be established again. Intuition is read in the heart. It’s independent of the brain, senses, or mind.

Instead of paying attention to the thoughts that the brain produces, or the habituated thoughts of the mind, get a better handle on your situation by first perceiving from a cleaner awareness. An awareness cultivated by mindfulness. At least use some of the mind’s higher functioning. There’s strength there and clarity.

In time you can bypass the past, any habits that don’t serve, the brain itself and even the mind by being informed at a soul level, working with intuition, honing and trusting it. Negative patterns may still arise of their own accord, however, you’ll be equipped to dismiss them, because you know the truth of yourself.

The cultivation of intuitive calmness requires unfoldment of the inner life. When developed sufficiently, intuition brings immediate comprehension of truth. You can have this marvelous realization. Meditation is the way. — Paramahansa Yogananda

Beyond the Mind

Lately, I've been pondering the way people think about healing energy and try to define it. Students in my Energy Healing Certification Program are charged with defining Reiki in a paragraph, an "elevator speech" they could use to answer the inevitable stranger's query "What is Reiki?" They don't pass the program without being able to do this. And it isn't easy! Search on the Internet and you'll find a great variety of definitions, just for the word Reiki. But look for energy healing and you'll find thousands of techniques and methods, variations on methods, and practitioners saying that their method is the most effective of them all. I love what I do, and yet I'm very interested in learning more, expanding my abilities, incorporating new energy methods, and making sense of it all from an experiential perspective. So news stories such as this one really draw my attention.

Dr. Nemeh lives in my area, and I know several people who have had individual or group sessions with him. As you saw on the video, he has "catchers" to stand behind the people he works on, because they often become overwhelmed with energy and collapse. That's different. I'm also fascinated by the noise discussed in this news story, that occurs when he does healings via Skype. I haven't tried doing a live distance healing over Skype, and I have some interesting and powerful distance healing techniques that I wonder if they would produce such a sound if I tried them live that way. Think I'll have to grab some colleagues and do some investigative work on that one! Then there's Braco, the Gazing Healer. He came here recently and one of my students went to see him, skeptical, and yet she reported feeling profoundly changed by the experience. Here's a video about him, and his healing sessions via Skype.Braco simply gazes, stares out at people, over internet or live. And those watching report powerful emotions, strong energy, and often visions while looking at him or being in his presence.Recently, I read a book "Whose Hands Are These?" by (the late) Gene Egidio, an autobiography. In this book, Gene tells his fascinating story, and reports how he began doing "Open Eye Healing" - basically staring and sharing healing energy for a group of people at a time. His crowds grew to enormous size, just as Braco's have. So what's going on here? There are connections. I believe the connections are these basic ideas:Energy is directed by intention. The energy that is directed is a natural part of our inherent essence already, but at a higher "frequency" or "vibration" so it affects our own by also elevating it, enhancing the ability to heal and balance. The limits to what we can do are ours to discover. The more we are open to allowing for endless possibilities, the more we find that to be true.Love, gratitude and humility strengthen this connection.Understanding that healing for others is a direct result of the recipient's openness and ability to receive the energy, rather than the healer "doing something to them" is also important. We are all connected by this ONE energy, our collective consciousness - intentions, thoughts, and emotions - create our reality. This creation via intention and manifestation by expectation of results is Spirit energy. Not separate from us, doing something, but a part of the endless and limitless energy of life that we are and create. This means that WE are, collectively, God/Spirit/Source. So what do we do now? Bring all of these methods, modalities, etc. under the umbrella of "energy work" and know that whatever we do, the concepts above apply to strengthen it. I think that Dr. Nemeh and Braco are just examples of what happens when we do that. (Plus perhaps some factors such as near death experiences, or being open to a spiritual "calling" where they are concerned). How much is learned, acquired, or brought into being by being open...that much I'm still engaged in finding out by observing myself. I'm one who knows that healing can be learned, because I learned to do what I can do now. I wasn't gifted from birth, had no significant near death experiences or bold flashes of light and understanding thrust upon me. No, just a lot of "try it and see." I know that I plan to learn more, try more, and discover more. And keep doing what I already am doing - try things and reflect on what it means. And I have Skype, but haven't tried live distance healing over Skype ...yet.Are you interested in moving beyond self-imposed limits too?

Reiki Practitioner Care and Feeding

Reiki practice is balancing, and not itself dangerous in any way.

Reiki practitioners, however, are human. When humans don’t know how to hold our balance, we can be in danger anywhere. Even in the otherwise safe space of Reiki treatment or Reiki initiation.

After all, we don’t just bring our Reiki hands when we offer treatment or initiation, we bring the rest of us too. All too often, Reiki practitioners don’t know what to do with the rest of ourselves.

I was lucky.

When I learned to practice Reiki in 1986, I had been a student of meditation and yoga for nearly 25 years. Although it was apparent to me that Reiki is a unique practice, my prior spiritual practice gave me a strong foundation that has made an enormous difference in my Reiki practice.

For example, meditation taught me to observe without becoming involved in what I was observing. This enabled me to maintain steadiness and hold my personal boundaries while offering treatment to people in even the most extreme situations, and to those with whom my life is most intertwined.

Many (many) years ago, my love of meditation took me to India, where I spent two years living in an ashram, marinating in spiritual practices, and getting acquainted with Ayurveda, the traditional medical system of the subcontinent.

Although its roots lie in antiquity, Ayurvedic principles and practices offer much guidance for maintaining health and happiness in today’s world.

Ayurveda can protect our well-being and address imbalances that conventional medicine cannot. This is especially valuable to Reiki practitioners, who are often constitutionally inclined toward imbalances that are too subtle for conventional medicine to treat.

Starting from the most subtle aspects of our being, the Ayurvedic model of health and well-being is sophisticated and complex. The first concern of Ayurveda is protecting one’s health; disease treatment is secondary. (This is generally true of indigenous medical systems, where there is not the assumption that a doctor can always put us back together.)

Ayurveda includes perspectives, practices, and knowledge that can help us keep our minds strong and steady as we go about our lives, as we offer Reiki treatment, and while giving Reiki initiation. But the same thing that makes it so valuable to us — the subtlety and highly individualized treatment — can also make Ayurveda hard to access and implement.

The wisdom of Ayurveda can easily get lost in translation, showing up in popular literature like a long list of don’ts that don’t make sense out of context.

I’ve long wondered how to get Ayurveda’s profound context and practical substance to the Reiki community. And then I connected with Prashanti De Jager.

I was impressed by Prashanti’s knowledge, his perspective of service, and his commitment to personal and business sustainability. I knew I wanted him to be part of my Reiki Silver Jubilee celebration.

Prashanti has decades of Ayurvedic training and Crazy Wisdom spiritual practice. He has the knowledge and wisdom that we need, and he understands how to share it and make it actionable for us.

I honestly don’t know where else you can access this important information. I do know that it can make a valuable difference in your daily well-being and in your Reiki practice. I am thrilled that Prashanti agreed to be part of my Thankfulness Interview series.

This interview will include a special offer for those who are on the free live webinar on Monday, November 21 at 3 PM Eastern US time (noon Pacific, 8PM in the UK). Click here to register.

Holiday Madness

One nice thing about working at Parrot Cay was that we could really bypass the whole holiday madness. The hotel would get crazy busy and work became more regimented, so we never really had a Festive time as staff and hubby and I enjoyed that. Earth and Humanity’s New Healing Narrative

© Pamir Kiciman 2010

Earth has been framed in many stories since its inception. Broadly, these are early creation myths, agrarian times, Flat Earth and being center of the universe, the Renaissance, the Enlightenment, the Industrial Revolution, Modernism, and finally the scientific/technological age of globalization. At this very juncture, Earth’s and humanity’s narrative within it is being radically rewritten. It’s an emergent story, one that’s on the edge of the future and so in some ways unknowable. However, there are clear signs and indicators. The first quarter of 2011 has been extremely eventful and what these signs and indicators mean, or how we may utilize them in solution-oriented ways can be confusing.

We must participate in the emergent story of the Earth and humanity without the mistakes and limitations of the old one. In essence, humanity’s trajectory on Earth has been one of increasing ‘separation.’ We began with a healthy respect for Nature and working in harmony with her. The Earth was understood to be sacred. This remained true even as ideas of ‘mine’ and ‘ours’ crept in when everyone wanted to protect their land. We started to feel separate from each other, while still feeling one with Nature. As cities developed, humans spent less time outdoors. With the Industrial Age and its aftermath all the way to the present, our relationship with Nature and the Earth shifted from gratitude for resources to profit from resources.

This shift and science’s ability to measure only matter but not ‘life’ has established the worldview that creation is inert. Only humans are alive, but even then we can only love those who are the same as we are. Trees are alive, but they’re a commodity so clearcutting rainforests is permissible. Animals are alive, but they don’t have our intellect, so we can raise them solely to be slaughtered as food. A seed is full of life, but what it grows into can’t be shipped easily so we’ll modify it genetically. Oil is not alive, so it’s perfectly fine to drill and extract it with no end in sight. If the world around us is inert, if we live in a dead solar system, then a neighbor who’s ‘different,’ the extinction of a species, or the final demise of old growth forests is of little consequence.

Current world events, capped by the earthquake in Japan and military action in Libya are a giant call to awakening. We don’t know what may happen next. What we do know is that when a planet and its life forms become commodities only, stripped of all other intrinsic value, that planet is in dire danger. The New Earth can only emerge from the understanding that creation is in fact not inert, but teeming with sacred life.

This is the choice point we’re facing collectively. There’s a way to heal through our dilemmas. The Earth herself has wounds, as does humanity. Oneness is an ancient truth we must now adopt as our new narrative to heal. Oneness has always been Earth’s and humanity’s narrative. What’s needed now is its embodiment. Our task now is to permeate social, political, economic and scientific systems with it. A united Earth can step into a possible future that’s now emerging.

Oneness includes compassion, not only tolerance. It includes wisdom, not only intelligence. It includes nonmechanical power. It includes abiding inspiration and creativity. We need all of these to usher in the sustainable good of the future.

Although there have been massive undercurrents to what we’re seeing in the world today, events are at the same time spontaneous and self-organizing. This and the severity of upheaval all around the world is a sure sign of much needed global healing. We can make this a teachable moment for humanity. The world’s healing traditions hold the wisdom that change includes cleansing. Cleansing is a process of reconciliation. The unhealed must be processed. This means it’s acknowledged and understood first, which leads to acceptance and insight. Finally, higher functional states open up.

When creation is understood as living, honoring it comes naturally, and our acts become hymns to it instead of dirges. Will you emerge and merge with Earth’s and humanity’s new healing narrative?

The Ins and Outs of Meditation

A basic meditation routine, or even better a more substantial one, is essential for successful living. No matter who you are or what your endeavor is, the way our world is currently, and the way we have to be in the world, this whole process of living is uniquely challenging, a special set of circumstances humanity hasn’t really encountered before. Wanting to focus on meditation, and not make a long list of these unique circumstances, I point you to the major global events of 2011 and some of the interpretive posts about them you can find on this blog by clicking through to this compilation.

Through the ages, meditation has always brought great benefits to the human condition. Remember that meditation has been around since well before the time of the Buddha, stretching way back into antiquity. Today, it probably holds the greatest benefits for us than it ever has.

Meditation practice predates Buddhism and all of the world religions. It has lasted through the centuries because it is direct, potent, and effective. — Sakyong Mipham

In meditation, what we’re doing is looking at our experience and at the world intelligently. — Sakyong Mipham

What is intelligence? One level it’s what an IQ test reveals. Intelligence doesn’t end there. It moves into knowing, wisdom, intuition, and clear-heartedness. Without these forms of intelligence we’re nothing but math geeks or some kind of super efficient robots. Intelligence includes our humanity, which includes our spirituality.

For a short while the immortal ray of light that is our soul wears a perishable mortal garment…but for all eternity the soul is sustained by the Infinite Source of that light. The more we meditate, the more we feel that consciousness. And the less we meditate, the less able we are to transcend identification with the little self—so many pounds of flesh encasing a limited mind bound by sense perceptions to the troublesome environs of the world. We have to get to the Self beyond its physical and mental instrumentalities to realize we are not fragile mortal beings… — Daya Mata

The human mind, normally equated with the brain by neuroscience, is limited. As Sakyong Mipham puts it, “Meditation is based on the premise that the natural state of the mind is calm and clear.” This is the knowledge that our various wisdom tradition have imparted. There’s the daily mind, and a higher mind with greater discernment, accessing wisdom and knowing.

This level of mind is termed buddhi in Sanskrit, from the root bud which means ‘to perceive’ or ‘to become awake.’ This form of intelligence discerns the true and the real from the false and the unreal. As Matthieu Ricard says, “It is through this unconditioned aspect of consciousness that we can transform the content of mind through training.” That training is meditation. Otherwise we remain in manas, or ‘outer,’ ‘sense’ mind, which is on the surface and handles impressions.

Here are a couple of more perspectives to help understand this:

Our minds are field-like, they are not confined to our brain. — Rupert Sheldrake

The conscious mind fails to grasp that which lies beyond the spheres of time, space, and causation. — Swami Rama

Pure consciousness without content is something all those who meditate regularly and seriously have experienced… — Matthieu Ricard

That “content” is the stuff of personality, the not-so-fun stuff! We want to move from content to substance. The substance of eternals like compassion, peace, and wisdom.

We’re also dealing with a paradox. There’s the real nature of the mind, and the mind we’re stuck with every day. There’s our humanness, then there’s our divinity. Leonard Jacobson puts it well: “We are on a journey of becoming that which we already are. That is the impossible paradox of our lives.” It’s not really impossible. It feels impossible until we get informed and empowered, and put into place a set of practices, the primary of these being meditation.

Meditation transcends time, the senses, and the subject-object relationships. By transcending these three, meditation takes us beyond the intellectual or rational level of consciousness. It is like looking through a screen; on one side of consciousness is all existence—thoughts, emotions, negativity, and our life patterns; on the other side is a very fine energy level—a deep meditative state. — Tarthang Tulku

Meditation is a first-person experience. It’s not looking at the world in the third-person. It’s not trying to understand our inner workings in the third-person. The first-person realm of meditation is holistic. It doesn’t cut reality up into pieces. It doesn’t need to understand how the brain works, to improve the workings of one’s mind. In meditation what’s known as the discursive mind can be disengaged. This is the mind that rambles. It’s unable to settle, to find its own depth. It remains on the surface, distracted and can’t get to the essence of things.

Whether it’s understood in terms of mind or being, our minds and our beings have a place that is calm and abiding. Calm abiding lives within us. It’s always there. There’s no app for it. There’s nothing to install. There is, however, an uncovering.

We have to uncover this lost place through meditation, and the application of meditative insight and orientation in daily living. Calm abiding is lost underneath all our pettiness, delusions and neuroses. The rational mind and the five senses informing it in their regular mode, give us only a partial and incorrect view of reality. This view keeps us trapped and attached. We’re operating within a limited informational field in daily living. In meditation, we have access to an informational field that penetrates the heart of reality.

It’s only from this wider and deeper field that we can make choices and decisions about how to best live, and to actually live well. It’s from this same field that we can positively influence the current state of affairs on our planet, and ensure a multi-generational sustainability of living and social systems.

When we talk about the techniques of meditation, these are techniques of life. — Sakyong Mipham

Meditation is a vast subject. Here’s some related material to help you with it. You may also add your input or ask questions in comments below. Often, answers tailored to your questions about meditation are the best way to get help with meditation.

The Life of Meditation

The average person, adult or child, isn’t exposed to meditation in our culture. Although the word is commonplace, there are now many scientific studies, and there’s a familiarity with it from media, meditation is still considered marginal, difficult, and too exotic to mean much.

This is unfortunate, because meditation is natural to life and the human experience. It’s natural, but because of conditioning it may at first seem challenging. It’s considered marginal or exotic, but the body-mind states it uncovers for us are all the various states we seek through other activities, both healthy ones and not so healthy ones. The benefits of meditation are lasting too. It doesn’t require special equipment, there’s no need for a student loan, you don’t have to go anywhere to meditate, and it enhances your days unlike anything else.

Our culture values hard work, success, family, fitness, entertainment, and possessions. These too are a part of life. Only a part. Not all of life. We become educated, trained and retrained to have and be all of these things. However, as Andrew Cohen puts it, “Meditation is training for life.” Life includes all the above, plus the human being, this breathing, feeling, pulsing, sensing entity. And Life in all its dimensions is also included in our days: The life of the planet (nature) and the cosmos, and the very source of Life as well. What addresses the totality of Life?

Civilization changes a person on the outside. Meditation softens a person from within, through and through. — Bhante Gunaratana

An essential ingredient of living is to have some meaning to it. We need meaning to feel alive, have purpose and feel it’s all worth something other than what’s on our bank statement. We also seek understanding. We seek to understand ourselves, and life in general. This is often accomplished through art, psychology, science, reading and documentaries. These of course have value. They can come up short when it comes to understanding our own nature.

Meditation is the natural state of mind, and the whole nature of the mind can be our meditation. — Tarthang Tulku

And…

Meditation is actually a process of seeking truth or understanding, of trying to discover the nature of existence and of the human mind. — Tarthang Tulku

It doesn’t have to feel foreign. Meditation doesn’t have to look or be any particular way. You don’t need ochre robes or flexible joints to meditate. You can keep your belief system. You can still go to your job in the morning, and tuck your kids into bed at night. With meditation, it’s still your life… only, it’s brighter and fresher. There’s a sense of well-being, better flow and greater contentment. You feel clearer and your heart is naturally full. Anxiety melts, stress dissipates and you don’t crash on weekends.

Meditation isn’t a panacea, at least initially. Your challenges and bothersome personal traits don’t disappear overnight, especially if you don’t make time for it. It doesn’t have to be a whole lot of time. Twenty minutes once or twice a day, and a willingness to let the fresh awareness it uncovers filter through into your days. Really paying attention to that awareness as it’s freed up of all the entanglements it’s usually caught up in.

Once we have touched meditative awareness, our questions dissolve, for both the questions and the answers to them are within the meditation. — Tarthang Tulku

Open yourself to the possibility that you can enhance your living substantially in a simple way with an all-encompassing practice that is natural and abiding. Find a method that appeals to you and commit. Give it three weeks, daily. You won’t even need to think about making it longterm after that.

Meditation is a way to quiet the mind so you can practice all day long wherever you are; see when there is grasping or aversion, clinging or suffering; and then let it go. — Jack Kornfield

Why Learn Reiki?

For many health related things we have to go to see a doctor or trained therapist, even for a massage. I mean, would you know what to do with a professional vision screener? I wouldn’t.

But with reiki, it is so simple to learn and to practice that anyone can easily learn to help themselves and others. While reiki does not replace your need for doctor visits, it does provide a nice addition to your regular medical care.

Humanity 2.0, New Earth, and Pachamama

It’s not certain if we’re at 2.0 or 3.0. What’s certain is that we need an update and upgrade. Our brain and neurology needs an upgrade, our mind too and our heart. In Buddhism there’s the concept of heart-mind. Ayya Khema tells us, “In Pali, heart and mind are one word (citta), but in English we have to differentiate between the two to make the meaning clear.” Pali is the language of many of the earliest Buddhist scriptures.

This teaching is a central one in Buddhism known as Bodhicitta, an awake heart-mind, or the heart-mind of enlightenment. In Tibetan psychology, the heart is synonymous with the mind. Tibetan worldviews are highly influenced by Buddhism, and consciousness, mental clarity, and the sense of self is known to rest in the heart. To put it simply, heart-mind points to a balance of wisdom and compassion, engaging both and giving both fair say in how we choose to live.

Today there are hopeful signs and utter chaos all at the same time. In the previous post I wrote: “At this very juncture, Earth’s and humanity’s narrative within it is being radically rewritten.” And: “We must participate in the emergent story of the Earth and humanity without the mistakes and limitations of the old one.” This observation is being made widely, and any thinking-feeling person can see the themes without trying too hard.

Robert Atkinson, Professor of Human Development and Religious Studies at the University of Southern Maine, writes:

Our collective story is lagging behind, resisting the flow of evolutionary change. The pre-twentieth-century story we have carried with us into the twenty-first century – built on the assumptions of duality, separation, and boundaries – has lost much of its meaning, power, and, most alarmingly, hope for the future. It faces crisis after crisis without offering any lasting resolution. The once well-understood principle of continual progress toward a collectively desired and beneficial goal is missing.

Soon after last month’s earthquake in Japan, Thich Nhat Hanh sent this message:

Dear friends in Japan,

As we contemplate the great number of people who have died in this tragedy, we may feel very strongly that we ourselves, in some part or manner, also have died.

The pain of one part of humankind is the pain of the whole of humankind. And the human species and the planet Earth are one body. What happens to one part of the body happens to the whole body.

An event such as this reminds us of the impermanent nature of our lives. It helps us remember that what’s most important is to love each other, to be there for each other, and to treasure each moment we have that we are alive. This is the best that we can do for those who have died: we can live in such a way that they continue, beautifully, in us…

This is a perfect example of balanced wisdom and compassion. The Japanese people give all of us hope. They have shown model behavior in the face of an ongoing triple disaster; earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear fallout. They are resilient, sharing resources and services, not being tempted to commit crime, and exercising neighborliness, altruism and hospitality. Make sure you watch this beautiful video (4/12/2011) to participate in healing for Japan.

The last sentence of Thich Nhat Hanh’s statement is deeply inspirational. Referring to those who’ve perished he says, “we can live in such a way that they continue, beautifully, in us…” For there to be any kind of continuation, we and the Earth first has to survive. “Beautifully” stands for so many things, but today let’s focus on the preservation of Nature and the Earth. Dr. Atkinson, again:

We need a new chapter in our evolving story that will restore hope, infuse new meaning into the wondrous process of creation, and unify our consciousness with a vision we intuitively trust. We need a story that keeps renewing itself.

2011 has so far shown that new narratives source in the most unlikely places. Adding to the surprise is the South American nation of Bolivia. According to The Guardian online, “Bolivia is set to pass the world’s first laws granting all nature equal rights to humans. The Law of Mother Earth, now agreed by politicians and grassroots social groups, redefines the country’s rich mineral deposits as ‘blessings…’”

Let’s not be naïve enough to believe industry and politics is going to change overnight to bring about the New Earth. This is still a huge step in the right direction, one that leader nations are strongly resisting. Here’s the depth and breath of Bolivia’s The Law of Mother Earth.

In the Andean worldview there’s a central Earth deity known as Pachamama. The environment and Pachamama are considered central to all life, with humans being equal to all beings, not higher, but equal. The Guardian writes:

In the indigenous philosophy, the Pachamama is a living being.

The draft of the new law states: “She is sacred, fertile and the source of life that feeds and cares for all living beings in her womb. She is in permanent balance, harmony and communication with the cosmos. She is comprised of all ecosystems and living beings, and their self-organisation.”

This law reads like poetry! Bolivia’s Foreign Minister has also said:

Our grandparents taught us that we belong to a big family of plants and animals. We believe that everything in the planet forms part of a big family. We indigenous people can contribute to solving the energy, climate, food and financial crises with our values.

You can catch the full story here, including video about the impacts of climate change on Bolivia.

Bolivia gives us hope.

Joseph Campbell who was a master of myth and story isn’t alive today. He would have been a fascinating source for the meaningful interpretation of our times. Yet, with some prescience, the following is his contribution to us today:

We’re in a free fall into future. We don’t know where we’re going. Things are changing so fast. And always when you’re going through a long tunnel, anxiety comes along. But all you have to do to transform your hell into a paradise is to turn your fall into a voluntary act. It’s a very interesting shift of perspective… Joyfully participate in the sorrows of the world and everything changes.

Healing Up and Healing Down

© Pamir Kiciman 2010

Many aren’t even aware of the option to be healed. The long history of healing is unknown to them, since it doesn’t get much airplay. And if healing is sought, it’s often for mundane reasons, although that’s still valid. Often people come to healing when there’s real trouble and all else has failed.

So, what is it, to heal, to be healed? Is it to feel better? Is it to have no pain? Is it to have a flesh wound close? Is it to end emotional suffering? Does everyone need healing? What if you’re healthy and your life is functional?

The short answer is, yes, everyone wants to be healed, whether that’s known to them consciously or not. The why is what this post is about.

There are some human fundamentals: Everyone wants to be happy, suffer not, be healthy, be provided for, have a place in the world, and have dignity. The way there we’re told is through the usual trajectory of schooling, career, advancement, relationship, a home, family, and the accumulation of stuff.

This isn’t a terrible model. It works in the world. Yet, it’s still a model of survival, with how well depending on the number and quality of creatures comforts you have. It causes a frustrating tug on these things to fulfill you that inherently don’t have that capacity. So you change majors, careers, partners, houses, and the particulars of your retirement account.

This model leaves you hungry, no matter how “full” your life may seem. It’s a cycle of searching. It’s a cycle of needs fulfillment.

Underneath all this searching there’s a seeking. You want to be happy, healthy, safe and loved. The only real way that can happen is if you get to know your true self. You can still have a career, family, and good retirement, but unless your true nature is known to you, fulfillment remains elusive and distant. The really juicy bit here is also that knowledge of your true nature as a foundation, launches the most incredible life in all its worldly permutations.

And that’s why everyone wants to be healed. At a core level everyone wants to become one with themselves, to be in their own fullness, power and beauty. What we’re told is the way there, isn’t the way there. The way there is inward. The way there is healing.

Your overarching purpose is to know your true nature. This unifies and clarifies all time-bound purposes. Knowing your true nature betters your outer world too, because then life is authentic. No matter your biography and resume, you’re here to know your true self. This is the real meaning of healing and it removes pesky pains and dramas too.

There’s alternative and complementary healing, only named such because medicine has become the primary avenue of health, for the resolution of human physical, emotional and mental ailments. There’s also spiritual healing. Both of these have been around for centuries, with storied traditions, which makes the alternative/complementary moniker misleading. In fact there’s only one kind of healing, and that is spiritual healing.

We are soul-infused biology. A healer heals at the soul level which filters to all human parts. Whether the spiritual is acknowledged or not, it’s unavoidable because it’s the very matrix of life, being and living.  All the external ways in which you want to bring yourself happiness, health, safety, success and love are in reality also ways in which you address your spirituality. What you’re searching is your original unity with your body, mind and soul, and the great living universe. This search is often fruitless unless it becomes a seeking.

Your true nature is real. It’s of Light substance, not carbon, unbound by time, Love in form. People work with healers to better their human, only to realize they were Divine all along. The human is Divine. The human is not skin-encased parts. That’s the body. It’s of the earth, it’s a fine vehicle for the sojourn here. The human is Heart and pure Being. It is Soul and Breath. It is Sacred Beauty.

There’s healing to be done in your timeline. Greater spiritual healing is to know your true nature. The physical body slowly breaks down. It needs healing. Your emotions and mental realm are challenged by this proposition of living. They need healing. Healing the dramas and pains of your life is a valid reason to work with a healer. It bears many gifts. There are yet more gifts.

“Who/What am I and what am I doing here?” is answered through healing. Awakening to your abiding self is the healing of illusion. The greatest illusion is that you’re your bank account, the kind of car you drive, your accomplishments and the physical life you lead. These have value. Their value is never quite realized without the missing piece: The conscious quest to know your true nature.

This quest is a healing up. Healing mentally, emotionally and physically is healing down to where you are on the planet at any given moment. Healing up is outside of time. It occurs in the nonphysical. It takes place in essence, not shape. It’s in the causal realm.

The healing of this primary illusion transforms everything. How you live, how you live in relation to the planet, in relation to yourself and other people and species, what you live, how you touch other lives, and what you leave behind from your expression in this specific iteration.

What do you live? Is it your Divinity?

Our true nature is self-authenticating. When we bump into our true nature, it authenticates itself. Something inside us knows. —Adyashanti

Buying A Television

What does Reiki have to do with buying a television? Everything and nothing.

In the Turks and Caicos shopping was made simple by the lack of stores and competition. If you wanted a television there were only two or three stores with very limited selection and very high prices. Even bargaining, I paid close to $900 for a 25 inch samsung tvs lcd 4 years ago.

So when we got to NY and walked into J&R Music World, I was completely overwhelmed to the point of paralysis. What brand? What size? HD? LED or LCD? So here came the reiki. Suitably calmed down and a bit more focused, I settled on a gorgeous 42? HDTV and am very happy.

Why Do Humans Meditate?

When we think of meditation, we most often think of it as originating in the Indian subcontinent. This is fairly accurate, although not the whole picture.

The earliest known reference to meditation in the region is found on one of the seals in the ruins of civilizations which existed prior to 1500 BCE. Chinese forms of meditation have been known to exist long before the seventh century BC. Siberian and African shamanic cultures hold even earlier precursors to the Asian meditative arts. In the West, meditation took on the form of contemplative prayer, with an unbroken tradition of mysticism from the NeoPlatonists through the medieval mystics. In our day and age, meditation is being studied scientifically for its effects on the brain.

In Sanskrit the generic term for meditation is dhyana, which refers to both inner contemplation, and the intermediate state between concentration on an object (dharana) and complete absorption in it (samadhi).

The general consensus is that humans have been meditating for 5000 years or so, and probably even longer than that. Why? Why do humans meditate?

It is to answer the fundamental question of “Who am I,” and related to it, “What is the purpose of life?” Meditation is essentially the quest for understanding and meaning. It’s a way for humans to find their place both in a cultural and cosmical context. And it has the added dimension of self-understanding which leads to an improved life.

Meditation is the process of self-discovery. On one level the meditation experience shows us the patterns of our lives—how we have carried on our emotional characteristics since childhood. But on another level it frees us from these patterns, making it easier for us to see our inner potentials. — Tarthang Tulku

All traditions from which the meditative arts are sourced include in their core a profound psychology. This is a psychology which is part and parcel of the wisdom that these traditions hold, and which the practitioner can also access.

When we look backward at the patterns of our thoughts, we can sometimes observe and identify the deceptions created by our self-images. We can learn to see through the mind’s posturings and pretenses and through all our explanations and excuses. We can realize we are still just playing games and are far from genuine self-knowledge. — Tarthang Tulku

When we improve our own life within first, then outwardly this has a ripple effect in our own household and from there in expanding circles in the rest of society.

Meditation is actually prescribed by more and more doctors. And there’s interest in meditation as a way to curb heart attacks. At the same time, the real value of meditation seems to be in this:

The animal has no power to analyze its condition and its environment; only man has that rational capacity. As such, man is meant to use that power to improve himself and to get the most out of life. Superior intelligence was not given to the human being merely to be used to eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner; marry and beget children. It was given that man might understand the meaning of life and find soul freedom…. Beyond all the books that are written, it is God’s Book of Nature that remains the most difficult to understand. But the whole creation, including the chapter of human existence, can be read when God becomes a teacher. — Paramahansa Yogananda

If the word “God” is challenging, replace it with anything else that works for you.

Having first-person knowledge about our own workings, the workings of Nature, and to be free from bondage to pain, suffering and delusion is invaluable, the ultimate prize. Meditation imparts real, useable wisdom. It lets us know we’re not little egos stuffed into physical forms that are designed to perish. With meditation we have a way out of our maddening thoughts and burning emotions. Our sojourn here is not a dicey game.

When we spend conscious time with our breath on a daily basis, with our consciousness, and our heart, we relate to life as a part of life, instead of separate from and afraid of it. This brings about a knowing that compassion is a worthwhile investment, awareness and consideration of ‘other’ whether other is human, species or planet, is beneficial for all and the entire journey can be enjoyable, meaningful and beautiful.

This is the world in which I want my child to have his future. How about you?

Awareness: Journey into the Heart-Mind

© Pamir Kiciman 2011

Awareness is a quality which utilizes more sources than the intellect or the brain’s information processing. The thinking mind cognizes and perceives but neither of these add up to awareness. Awareness includes presence; the presence of the one cognizing. It also considers experiences available from other sources. Signal processing isn’t the only experience available to the human organism.

When we look out at the world with the five senses and what the brain processes through them, the world is solid and works in specific ways. When we look out to the world with awareness, its solidity starts to break up. It also becomes apparent that there are other possibilities in the way the world works.

This is true of our inner workings as well. If we only cognize our challenges and dilemmas, many times they seem unsolvable, set, and punishing. If we bring the same into awareness, however, space opens up and new possibilities arise in that space. We also find that we’re far less identified with or even as those ‘personal problems.’

If we imagine that our mind is like the blue sky, and that across it pass thoughts as clouds, we can get a feel for that part of it which is other than our thoughts. The sky is always present; it contains the clouds and yet is not contained by them. So with our awareness. It is present and encompasses all our thoughts, feelings, and sensations; yet it is not the same as them. To recognize and acknowledge this awareness, with its spacious, peaceful quality, is to find a very useful resource within. We see that we need not identify with each thought just because it happens to occur. We can remain quiet and choose which thought we wish to attend to. And we can remain aware behind all these thoughts, in a state that offers an entirely new level of openness and insight. — Ram Dass

The thinking process gets all the fanfare. Schooling produces thinkers. Our mental capacities are touted, researched, edified and respected. Rightly so in many ways; the human mind is a pretty amazing thing. What becomes detrimental is the focus on the mind to the exclusion of other amazing aspects of our being, the chief of which is the heart.

This isn’t the biological heart or the heart of romance. It’s not operating only at the level of emotion. It isn’t entangled in our self-identity as ego. In fact it’s free of us entirely, acting as a backdrop to daily existence, and a container for the human journey.

In Sanskrit this Heart is called hridayam, the locus of consciousness where our true Self lives.

There’s nothing bad about having an ego. Those thoughts and feelings are necessary for a healthy personality. But if you identify so strongly with the ego that you think that’s all there is, that limited view can keep you from your deeper Self. — Ram Dass

As amazing the mind can be, it’s also conditioned, fragmented, distracted, trapped and fearful. It isn’t able to extricate itself from such influences by relying only on its own brilliance. It needs the balance of the Heart, and the awareness that’s available there. It needs to become heart-mind.

… in all Asian languages — at least I’ve been told this; I don’t know all Asian languages — but in all Asian languages the word for “mind” and the word for “heart” are the same word. — Jon Kabat-Zinn

There isn’t a mind without the Heart. Thinking without awareness gets us into trouble. We become narrow and exalt temporary truths. Thought-generated awareness is limited, the input it gets comes from the material world which gives us only a partial view.

The heart-mind is awareness turned inward, awareness of the spiritual universe within, and the quality of that awareness, the feeling that accompanies it, is love. — Ram Dass

True awareness doesn’t originate in the mind. Cognition and perception are too narrow to produce awareness. There’s a contemplative quality to awareness and routine thoughts are too fast and disparate to be contemplative. The mind needs the ballast of the Heart. The mind is linear and trapped in time. The Heart is nonlinear and timeless. With heart-mind we can be in time and deal with our daily life, and also renew and recalibrate in the timeless. With heart-mind our sojourn in time is sweetened and enhanced by our diving into a nonlinear, timeless center of wholeness.

Mind by itself also leaves us trapped in ‘local problems.’ These are the stuff of everyday living, all the usual pressures, stresses and dramas. Awareness sources in the nonlocal. It’s ever-present and impersonal. It doesn’t make judgments or evaluations. It simply and directly reveals what is. Although readily available, like the Heart, awareness needs to be cultivated, promoted and made familiar to our consciousness.

So much of what is considered “smart” is brain-based. There’s another, holistic intelligence; that of the Heart. Education, business, social and behavioral sciences all emphasize brain development. Yet we’re inhuman without the Heart. It’s not the heart of cardiology or heartache that trumps the brain, but the Heart of exquisite Being and Presence.

Awareness is available at the Being level of reality. Here there’s Presence. Mind isn’t equated with the brain in its superlative states. Mind breaks the barriers of the brain. Yet even then, if it doesn’t hold hands with the Heart, it can’t know itself, it can’t participate in Presence.

Presence is ineffable, but it can be known and felt once we make ourselves available to it.

This presence whether experienced as Allah, as Atman, as Sunyata, or as the Buddha-nature or as Bodhisattva; whether as Tao or as the One or as the Divine Feminine, is the atmosphere in which humans breathe deepest and without which they eventually suffocate. — Thomas Berry
